Vintage ZZ Top Concert CD Announced – UGO

For a band that prided themselves on being a kick ass live act, it’s a bit of a headscratcher that ZZ Top never issued a definitive live album in their career (1975′s Fandango! was only half live, and didn’t include ZZ classics). Now, all the befuddlement should be settled once and for all.

May 31st will see the release of ZZ Top Live in Germany 1980 via Eagle Rock Entertainment, which is the audio portion of half of a live DVD that was issued in 2009, titled Double Live Down. On tour at the time in support of their 1979 album, Degüello (best known for spawning the classic rock radio standard, “Cheap Sunglasses”), the Texas trio was filmed and recorded for German television’s popular Rockpalast program.

For a live document of the group before their “MTV makeover” (which was still a few years away at the time of this recording), ZZ Top Live in Germany 1980 is hard to beat, as it balances both classics (“La Grange,” “Tush,” the aforementioned “Cheap Sunglasses”) with killer album tracks (“Waitin’ for the Bus,” “Precious and Grace,” “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers’).
