UNCW campus remains closed and curfew in place Saturday morning – WWAY NewsChannel 3

The UNCW campus continues to assess damage and restore services after HurricaneIrene. The campus curfew will be lifted and students may leave the residence hallsat 12 noon. The campus will reopen at 2 p.m., with services available in RandallLibrary, Fisher Student Center, Fisher University Union and Wagoner Dining Hall.Campus Dining will provide food services for students on campus.
The Emergency Operations Center is conducting building assessments and responding toreports of downed trees, power outages and roof leaks. Leak repair and removal oftrees and limbs is taking place to prepare for the 2 p.m. opening of campus.Students are asked to only go to those buildings on campus that have reopened withservices, and to use caution when traveling on and off campus. Please limit travelin order to ensure your safety and not hamper assessment and recovery efforts takingplace on campus and throughout the county.
Irene is now a Category 1 storm with winds of 85 mph over Pamlico Sound. Gale forcewinds continue to occur on campus with gusts to tropical storm force. Winds willdiminish now through 3 p.m., with scattered rain expected through 2 p.m. UNCWreceived about 6 inches of rain. Approximately 20 trees were downed, with 60 treesdamaged and numerous major limbs fallen.
Students, faculty and staff should anticipate that classes and offices will operateon a normal schedule Monday, Aug. 29.
