The season finales are piling up as we head to May 25 — the day the season ends, Oprah Winfrey wraps up her talk show and “American Idol” declares a winner. Here are a few programs to keep in mind this weekend:
1. “Smallville” calls it quits. The CW drama delivers a two-hour series finale at 8 tonight. The show ran for 10 years, a notable achievement in this increasingly fractured TV universe. The most credit for that long run goes to Tom Welling, who was wonderful as Clark Kent. Michael Rosenbaum, Annette O’Toole and John Glover guest star.
2. “Survivor: Redemption Island” declares another winner at 8 p.m. Sunday. The show this season has lived in the shadow of “American Idol,” the Wednesday competition on Fox. Yet the chance to see Boston Rob finally win could lure former fans back, and the two-hour finale promises twists to the familiar formula. A cast reunion follows at 10 p.m. Sunday on CBS.
3. “Desperate Housewives” concludes another season with two hours at 9 p.m. Sunday. Has you interest in Wisteria Lane waned? The ABC hit will try to intrigue you with a big dinner party, a stalker and a murder, which should set up a cliffhanger.
4. Defense Secretary Robert Gates talks to Katie Couric in a “60 Minutes” interview. Of President Barack Obama’s decision to go after Osama bin Laden, Gates says, “I was very concerned. So was the president. … I worked for a lot of these guys and this is one of the most courageous calls — decisions — that I think I’ve ever seen a president make.” The CBS news magazine airs at 7 p.m. Sunday.
5. “The Killing” has been the most noteworthy addition to the spring schedule. The AMC drama, which depicts the investigation of a girl’s murder, delivers another devastating episode at 10 p.m. Sunday. The girl’s mother, brilliantly played by Michelle Forbes, struggles with new revelations. The heroine, homicide detective Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos), makes some unsettling discoveries of her own. “The Killing” is simply the best new drama this season.
Also on tap: “CSI: NY” and “Blue Bloods” conclude their seasons starting at 9 tonight on CBS. “Friday Night Lights” offers a new episode at 8 tonight on NBC. “The Celebrity Apprentice” delivers two more hours at 9 p.m. Sunday on NBC, but that season finale will be May 22.
