Ames residents heading to the Iowa State Fair may want to take a walk through the William C. Knapp Varied Industries Building open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through the end of the fair.
Those that do will find that a number of Ames residents have won categories within the Fabric and Threads contests, according to news releases from the Iowa State Fair.
Annmarie Kurtenback, of Nevada, earned Best of Show and Sweepstakes honors in the Fabric and Threads Tatting contest judged prior to the start of the 2011 Iowa State Fair. I Pour-el, Ames won third place in the bookmark contest and was an honorable mention in the ornaments category. For more go to the Iowa State Fair website.
Emily Borts took first place in the Fabric and Threads junior division for a knitted article and a pieced article.
Two Ames residents placed in Fabric and Threads Clothing Construction competition categories. Joey Elliot won second place in the children’s smocked garment category. Diane McCauley won second place in the adult – jacket or blazer (lined), adult – garment from silhouette pattern, and adult – garment from fashion by coni or butterick pattern categories and first place in the garment from fashion by coni or butterick pattern.
In the Fabric and Threads Sewing for the Home contest, Marylou Nelson, won fourth place in a pillow cases category.
Four women won prizes in the Fabric and Threads Hand Knitting contests. Tracy Borts took first place in the baby afghan category and fourth place in lace shawl. Denise Balvanz won first place in child’s pullover sweater (ages 2 to 10), and pullover sweater (2 or more colors, worsted and coarser) and she took second place in infant sweater or dress and she took fourth place in bag or tote. Jeanine Strodtman took first place in Pullover Sweater (1 color, worsted and coarser). Stacy Ross took third place in mittens and gloves of two or more colors and third place in holiday decoration.
Jan Cunningham took places in two categories of the Senior Citizens Division of the Fabric and Threads contest. She won second place in pieced quilt and third place in scrap quilt.
Ames Fabric and Threads Hooked Rugs contest winners included Eden Schmitt, Marie Schropp and Shirley J. Cloyd. Schmitt took first place in rug: mat size 5 cut or larger, and third place in small pieces. Schropp took first place in rug: standard size 5 cut or larger, took second place in wall hangings: real life motifs and third place in rug: mat size 5 cut or larger. Cloyd took second place in wall hangings: decorative, fanciful motifs.
Finally three Ames residents took prizes in the quilt division and their works are also on display in the varied industries building.
Jody Aultman won second place in the wall quilt, mixed technique. Marla Reedholm won second place in the pieced crib quilt and Tricia Lenz won fourth place in the applique small quilts division.
