NY governor authorizes UN office building – Wall Street Journal

NEW YORK — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation authorizing construction of a United Nations office building next to its Manhattan headquarters.

Sponsors say the new building, which should be no taller than the 39-story UN Secretariat Building, is intended to house and improve security for staff. The workers are now spread among buildings owned by the city and private landlords.

A piece of state park land would be lost in the construction. The governor says funds “will be designated for substantial improvements to park and public lands in Manhattan.”

A formal agreement has to be signed by Oct. 10 for the land transfer to the United Nations Development Corp.
