NEW YORK—The Fire Department of New York’s (FDNY) fire safety unit is handing out free smoke alarm batteries at multiple locations across the boroughs until Sunday, March 12. The giveaway began on Thursday.
The FDNY reports in a recent web post that while 97 percent of New York City homes have fire alarms installed, 33 percent of these alarms do not work probably because they do not have functioning batteries. Therefore, a plan was hatched to give away free batteries (donated by Duracell in the five boroughs.
Smoke alarms play “a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries,” said the National Fire Protection Association. In addition, smoke alarms decrease fire incidents and cut chances of deaths in fire to half. Here’s the NYFD’s list of locations to pick up free batteries.
