Mangano fires back at union head over BBQ – Long Island Business News

An employee appreciation barbecue held by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano this afternoon has ignited a war of words between Mangano and Police Benelovent Association President James Carver.

In a strongly worded email to union members yesterday, Carver said the invitation was “a huge slap in the face to each and every county worker” considering Mangano’s recent layoffs of over 100 employees and salary freezes for the rest of the county’s work force. Carver also suggested Mangano should cancel the event.

Not to be outdone, Mangano released his own missive to county workers today, taking aim at Carver for “urging me to not thank you for working harder during these challenging times,” and notifying them that the barbecue was on.

“Grandstanding is NOT the answer,” Mangano said in the correspondence. “Rather than running to [the media] to get his name in print, perhaps Jim Carver should leave his cushy office to take a tour in a patrol car.  This would save the county money and certainly help workers more than opposing a free barbecue that thanks employees for their efforts.”

Mangano also took Carver and the other union heads to task, saying if everyone gave a little, no one would have to give a lot to address the county’s fiscal challenges. But union officials have said they repeatedly come to the table offering fair concessions, but the county just keeps asking for more.

County officials noted the supplies for the barbecue were privately donated.
