It’s Rays Day in St Pete, Mayor Foster proclaims – Tbo.com
ST. PETERSBURG –
Twelve hours after the Tampa Bay Rays clinched a playoff spot with a stunning victory over the New York Yankees, the city of St. Petersburg will raise a team flag over city hall.
Mayor Bill Foster will celebrate the Rays winning the American League wild card by raising the blue and white flag at noon today at city hall, 175 Fifth St. N.
Foster is proclaiming today as Rays Day and is encouraging residents to support the team by donning Rays gear.
Buying tickets for home playoff games against the Texas Rangers also won’t hurt, Foster said in a news release.
Businesses are urged to support the team in their signs and marquees.
The city is planning a public rally prior to the American League Division Series Game 3 at Tropicana Field on Monday.
The Rays open the best-of-five series against the Rangers on Friday at Arlington, Texas.
The team leaves for Dallas this afternoon. Players will gather at Tropicana Field and leave on buses for the airport at 1:30 p.m., according to a team news release.
The Rays advanced by rallying from a 7-0 deficit to beat the New York Yankees 8-7 in 12 innings late Wednesday while the Boston Red Sox lost to the Baltimore Orioles. The Rays and Red Sox were tied for the wild-card spot going into those games.
