Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nexus S: Hot Trends – TheStreet.com

NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Popular searches on the Internet Wednesday include Dow Jones Industrial Average after U.S. and European stock prices plummeted on Tuesday.

The Dow reached its lowest level since March and extended its losing streak to eight days, its longest since the 2008 financial meltdown. The selloff came even as a bill was passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives to raise the federal debt limit, which avoided a Treasury default. The Dow lost nearly 266 points on Tuesday.

“Nexus S” is a hot search as retailer Best Buy (BBY) is currently selling the Google(GOOG) smartphone for free, online and in stores.

Best Buy started the free promotion on Tuesday night. It will run for 24 hours ending at midnight tonight. The phone might be free, but consumers will still need to sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T(T), Sprint(S) or T-Mobile.

Hosni Mubarak is another popular search as the trial of the former Egyptian president began Wednesday in Cairo. Mubarak faces charges of being involved in the deaths of anti-government protesters and corruption, which he denies. During three weeks of political unrest before Mubarak’s 30-year reign in Egypt was brought to an end, 846 people were reportedly killed and more than 6,000 were injured. Mubarak’s two sons, ex-interior minister and six former aides also are facing trial. If convicted, Mubarak faces 15 years in prison or the death penalty.
The chatter on Main Street (a.k.a. Google, Yahoo! and other search sites) is always of interest to investors on Wall Street. Thus, each day, TheStreet compiles the stories that are trending on the Web, and highlights the news that could make stocks move. — Written by Brittany Umar.>To order reprints of this article, click here: Reprints
