Delaware Man Among Those Predicting Weekend Apocalypse – 10TV
DELAWARE, Ohio — There is a group of people who believe — based on a mathematical equation found in the Bible — the world as we know it will come to an end on Saturday.
At 6 p.m. on Saturday, an earthquake with more power than an atomic bomb will destroy Earth, and only those who believe in Jesus will be spared and lifted to Heaven. The forecast of the Apocalypse sounds far-fetched, but a Delaware County man is among the believers, 10TV’s Kevin Landers reported.
Gunther von Harringa is convinced that he and his family will not be on Earth beyond this weekend.
“The Bible indicates that there will be a world-wide earthquake of unparalleled proportions,” he said.
Wearing a baseball cap and T-shirt that proclaim May 21, 2011 as Judgment Day, von Harringa said the end of the world is a certainty.
“It’s a guarantee,” he said. “You would bet your life on it. I would stake my life on it.”
So certain of the impending Apocalypse is von Harringa that he has gone so far as to put Judgment Day signage on his house and car, Landers reported.
Von Harringa said he does not care if people think he is going a little too far.
“I don’t have a problem with that. They thought Noah was crazy in his day, and he warned the world for 120 years,” von Harringa said.
Believers likes Von Harringa are following the teachings of Christian broadcaster Harold Camping. Von Harringa provides religious programming for Campings broadcasts, Landers reported.
Camping claims to have unlocked a hidden code in the Bible that points to May 21, 2011 as the end of days.
Not everyone is as convinced, however. Pastor Beau Stanley of Grace Brethren Church in Westerville said despite Camping’s prediction of doom, his church will hold services on Sunday.
“It’s not extreme to believe that Jesus is coming back, but it is quite unusual for someone to predict a specific date for the Rapture and to do it with level of dogmatism that he’s done,” Stanley said.
As for Von Harringa, he said he plans to spend Saturday praying with his family, and come Sunday he’s convinced that he, along with the rest of the believers like him, will be in Heaven.
And, if it doesn’t happen?
“That’s an impossibility I can’t even countenance,” he said.
