Change Time and Batteries – KRMG

(Tulsa, Ok)–Tulsa firefighters are urging all Tulsa residents to use the daylight savings time change on March 13 as a reminder to change the batteries in their smoke detectors.

Working smoke detectors can decrease the risk of dying in a home by nearly 50 percent by providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape. Although 82 percent of American homes have smoke detectors, one-third of the detectors are useless due to worn or missing batteries.

In addition to changing your batteries, Tulsa firefighters suggests following these tips to help keep you safe:

1. Install smoke detectors on every level of the home, including basements, inside each bedroom and outside of every sleeping area.

2. Sleep with bedroom doors closed.

3. Test smoke detectors monthly by pushing the “test” button, which will activate the alarm.

4. Smoke alarms are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These devices use strobe lights and can have vibration equipment added to them.

5. Be sure your alarm has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.

6. Smoke alarms are an important part of a home fire escape plan. Make sure your family has a plan in case of fire.

7. Smoke alarms that include a recordable voice announcement, in addition to the usual alarm sound, may be helpful in waking children through use of a familiar voice.
